Pantone Solid Coated vs RGB/CMYK: Why Your Custom Medal Colors Look Different on Metal

The blue looked perfect in the PDF. The medal arrives, and somebody asks, “Why is it different?” Before changing the paint, check what everyone actually approved.

One blue, three different jobs

Imagine a race organizer sending a logo from a website. The designer approves it on a laptop, the purchasing team checks a phone screenshot, and the factory receives a PDF. Everyone says “the same blue,” but they may be looking at different representations.

RGB describes color for displays. CMYK describes cyan, magenta, yellow and black process-color components. Pantone Solid Coated provides named spot-color references shown on coated paper. These are useful tools, but they do not perform interchangeable jobs.

A medal adds another step: turning a reference into a physical finish. Agreeing on a color identifier starts that conversation; approving the actual construction completes it.

Useful for digital artwork. A display emits light; brightness and color settings affect what you see.

The print description

Useful for process printing. Output depends on the printing system, substrate and color profile.

The shared reference

A named target represented on coated paper. It is not a ready-made enamel formula.

The “C” does not mean coated metal

This small letter causes a surprisingly large misunderstanding. In the Pantone Graphics system, C refers to coated paper; U refers to uncoated paper. Pantone explains that the paper changes the appearance of the printed color.

Choosing a Solid Coated reference can give buyer and supplier a common visual target. It does not mean the medal is coated with Pantone ink, or that a paper swatch and filled metal will look identical under every condition.

Send the complete reference, including its suffix. If a brand manual specifies another system, share it rather than silently replacing it with a nearby C color. Agree on the target and any proposed substitution before sampling.

Why a conversion is not an approval

An online converter can suggest a nearby color, but it cannot inspect your medal. Likewise, an RGB number without its color-space context is incomplete information. Adobe’s color-management guidance explains why document and output profiles matter when interpreting color values.

Keep the original brand specifications and embedded profile when available. If your only reference is a screenshot, say so. Ask for a proposed physical reference instead of treating an automatic conversion as the final production instruction.

For printed medal artwork, confirm the intended printing workflow with the supplier. For solid enamel areas, confirm the agreed color targets. A gradient illustration and a single filled logo area may require different decisions within the same project.

Metal adds an appearance of its own

Picture the same blue beside a bright gold border and a dark border. The surrounding contrast can change how the blue appears, even without changing the color material. A shiny surface also catches highlights that a flat preview does not reproduce.

Opacity matters too. Translucent color allows the underlying surface to contribute to the effect; an opaque fill behaves differently. Do not assume that changing the plating will produce a predictable color shift through every enamel.

Ask the supplier to identify the color material, finish and any clear coating in the sample. If you change one after approval, review the appearance again. Our metal finish guide helps separate finish choices from color choices.

A useful distinction

The reference defines what you are aiming for. The approved sample shows what that target looks like in the agreed medal construction.

Compare under the same conditions

A phone photograph is useful for discussing layout and obvious issues. It is a weak final judge of subtle color differences: lighting, exposure, white balance and the receiving screen all enter the comparison.

For a color-critical order, compare the physical sample and agreed reference together under consistent, agreed lighting. Avoid mixing daylight and warm room lighting in the same inspection. Use a neutral surrounding area, and consider viewing angle when reflections are strong.

If instrumental measurements are required, agree on the method, geometry and acceptance tolerance with the supplier beforehand. A bare numerical tolerance is not a complete inspection procedure, especially across different surface finishes.

What to send with your next order

Try this brief: “Please use the attached brand reference for the blue area. Confirm the full color designation, propose the fill and gold-tone finish, and provide a physical sample for approval before bulk production.”

For a repeat order, identify the retained approved sample and previous specification. Ask how the new batch will be compared; do not rely only on an old screen proof. Keep a clear record of who approved which version.

The goal is not to make every screen agree. It is to give the buyer and factory one documented target, one agreed construction and a practical way to judge the result.
