I don’t understand customs clearance. Can the factory deliver my order to my door?
Yes, door-to-door delivery may be available. The useful question is not simply “Do you offer DDP?” It is: what destination, costs, clearance work and recipient cooperation are included in writing?
Many buyers call this arrangement DDP—Delivered Duty Paid. When DDP Incoterms® 2020 is properly agreed, the seller delivers to the named destination, handles export and import clearance, and pays applicable import duties and taxes. The buyer receives the goods—but may still need to provide local information and cooperate with customs or the carrier.
Start with the destination
Turn “deliver it to me” into one precise address.
A country name is not enough for a reliable door-delivery quote. Send the city, complete postal code, commercial or residential address, contact name, telephone number, product type, expected quantity and required arrival date.
Ask the supplier to name the delivery point in the quote:

For a fixed event, state the date the goods must be in your hands—not only the factory’s shipment date.
What DDP is meant to cover
One route, five responsibilities.
Under an agreed DDP Incoterms® 2020 sale, the seller’s delivery responsibility normally follows this path.

Arrange applicable export clearance in China.

Book the main carriage and any necessary transit.

Import clearance
Arrange the destination-country import formalities.

Duties and taxes
Pay applicable import duties, taxes and clearance costs within the agreed DDP scope.

Named destination
Bring the goods to the agreed place, ready for the buyer to receive them.
DDP allocates delivery, customs, cost and risk responsibilities. It does not automatically define product quality, payment milestones, cargo insurance, free storage, delay remedies or returns. Put those points elsewhere in the quote or order.
The buyer still has a role
Door delivery does not mean “ignore every message.”
Requirements vary by destination, shipment, product, value and recipient type. No universal checklist covers every country.
Customs, the carrier or a local agent may still ask the recipient for information. Depending on the destination, that can include:
- Identity or company details
- A tax, EORI, VAT, EIN or other local number
- Address evidence or an import authorization
- Confirmation of the product, material, quantity or intended use
- A response to a customs or delivery call
- Someone available to accept the shipment
The supplier should check route feasibility before quoting. The buyer should provide accurate information promptly. Incorrect details, refusal to cooperate or repeated missed delivery can lead to storage, return or redelivery costs.
Before you accept “all included”
Check the written DDP price line by line.
Do not stop at “Is tax included?” Ask what the total actually covers.
Are quantity, unit price, material, dimensions, process and accessories confirmed?
Are tooling, sample production and sample courier costs separate or included?
Does the price cover individual packing, gift boxes, export cartons and carton marks?
Will the route use express, air, sea or more than one mode?
Who arranges and pays for export and import formalities?
Does the quote explicitly include applicable destination-country import charges?
Which full address is named? Are residential or remote-area charges included?
For pallets or heavy cartons, who provides people or equipment to unload?
How are inspection, storage, address changes, redelivery or returns handled?
Is insurance or another compensation arrangement included, and what limits apply?
In everyday quotations, some providers use “DDP” loosely to describe a tax-inclusive logistics line. The written destination and scope are more useful than the three letters alone.
From inquiry to doorstep
What a first order actually looks like.
Send the product brief and full destination
Share artwork or references, quantity, size, finish, packaging, complete address and required arrival date. Mark decisions that are still open.
Confirm the product price and DDP price
Ask for product, tooling or sample, packaging and DDP freight to be shown separately so changes can be recalculated.
Approve artwork and the sampling plan
DDP does not approve the product. Confirm wording, colors, dimensions, front and back, relief, finish, ribbon and packaging in writing.
Produce, inspect and pack
Before shipment, review the agreed product photos, video, quantity and packing evidence. Higher-risk orders can include a pre-agreed third-party inspection.
Recheck the recipient information
Confirm the contact, telephone, address and any local tax or import details before the shipment leaves.
Track, respond and receive
Watch for carrier messages. On arrival, check carton count and visible damage, then document any problem within the carrier’s claim period.
DDP or DAP?
Door delivery can use different import arrangements.
Seller handles import
The seller handles import clearance and applicable duties and taxes. This can suit a first-time buyer when the destination allows a workable DDP route.
Buyer handles import
The seller transports to the named destination, but the buyer handles import clearance and import charges. This can suit buyers with their own broker or import account.
Some countries require a local entity to act as importer or restrict what a foreign seller can do for customs and tax. In those cases, true DDP may be difficult and DAP may be clearer. A reliable supplier should explain the limitation instead of promising effortless clearance everywhere.
Five misunderstandings to avoid
DDP simplifies the journey. It does not erase every condition.

DDP does not guarantee one arrival date. Production time, transit estimates and the required in-hand date must be stated separately.

DDP does not automatically include cargo insurance. Ask about the declared value, protection, exclusions and claim limit.

DDP does not mean the recipient can ignore requests. Local authorities or carriers may still need information.

DDP does not make every exceptional cost unconditional. Wrong addresses, missing documents or rejected delivery can create extra charges.

DDP does not approve product quality. Artwork approval, sampling, bulk inspection and delivery are separate checkpoints.
